- An American sculptor, occasional painter and illustrator.
- 10th Nov 1880- 19th Aug 1959.
- He moved to Europe 1902 and then became a British citizen in 1911.
- He didn't like pretty art, he made bold, often harsh, massive forms of bronze or stone.
- His work often shocked his audience.
- At the time Greek sculptures were favoured by europeans, but he experimented with art tradition from India, west Africa and the Pacific Islands.
- He is a founding member of the London Group in 1913
- Knighted in 1954
I like the idea of his work going against the norm of the traditional sculptures in his day, I also like that his work isn't created with smooth straight lines, you can see where he has worked into it, how the hair moves est.
