Illustration own research - Kenichi Yokono

Kenichi Yokono

  • Born 1972, Japan, Kanazawa, Ishikawa.
  • He makes traditional wood blocks but instead of treating as for painting the wood he carves it and then displays it.
  • He exclusively uses red and white.
  • Manga, anime and horror movie tropes dominate his work.
  • In his work is images both sinister and saccharine- pandas, hammers and sickles, deadpanning children.
I find his work so amazing when you read what he does, "carves wood" for some reason in my mind i thought of something quite basic and plane but it is so rich with detail and beautiful its hard to  believe that someone has hand carved it. And i think that him sticking with the same colours just brings something special to his work.
